What's special about this is the lack of commercial development or enterprise, it's not a remote outpost however and it does exist within a evenly but sparse populated region with only very small towns..... with only 3 motels nearby....but the benefit is the central location ..... it's right in the middle of the most beautiful rugged country in Missouri with the highest elevations in Missouri .... nearby are some of the tallest floor to peak slopes in Missouri .... just tons of places, Johnson Shut-ins, Arcadia Valley, Silver Mines, Elephant Rocks, lesterville, Black River, Tom Sauk Mountain, and a hundred more non-commercial completely nature made unpolluted real place...
One of Missouri's Park's, beautiful scenery, fishing and white water canoeing and season, not for the first timers.
This is not technically the "Ozarks" it is actually the St. Francois Mountains, just downstream are mountains that rise 870 and 1000 feet above the river with slopes less than a mile wide. This range is Precambrian and caused by volcanic activity nearly 1.5 billion years ago. Later on the Salem Plateau lifted and created what is now referred to as the Ozarks. Actually "Ozark" is just a name that stuck for an area that covers nearly half of Missouri and Arkansas, about the size of an average Midwestern state. Stand here and under your feet is igneous rock, red granite formed that is 10 times older than the Rocky Mountains and 3 times older than the Appalachians.... the streams (and especially the ones in the St. Francois Mountains) are Crystal Glass Clear, sometimes with perfect visibility to 15 feet deep in some holes or more.... Do not kayak or canoe here unless you are certain of your skills, in the spring it can surpass safety levels for even professionals ......I like it the way it is, in the spring with rains it will see it's heaviest use by people .... much of the summer other than holiday's it's lightly used by people . It has a paved asphalt trail very capable of handling wheelchair traffic or for people with special accessibility needs ...it is unfortunately for some about a mile each way ...with a an extremely nice viewing station at the end for overlooking the river. This was privately owned and a commercial park before the State of Missouri obtained it so there are old trails all around. Includes horseback riding which is probably the most participated in thing for the summer months .....
Warning, camping and or sleeping on the ground in the St. Francois Mountains will connect your soul into the second oldest known place in North America ...1.5 billion years old - solid rock - pure granite - mother earth ..... once you go home, ET will start phoning you from here, and I'm not joking you will feel compelled to return and do so unknowingly
Great park! Fantastic place to set out on a kayak. Nice wildlife areas and a shooting and archery range.
Very nice area to take a short hike along the Shut-ins. I was the only person there so good to avoid the crowds. Paved path to the river.
This place is incredibly beautiful. Unfortunately, you're not supposed to swim here though.
